INTRODUCTION

Druk Air is the national airline of Bhutan, based in Paro. It operates scheduled services to six cities in four neighbouring countries. Its main base is Paro Airport (PBH). Druk Air is the only airline to serve Bhutan's only commercial airport at Paro. Paro is located in a deep valley at an elevation of 7300 ft above sea level. The surrounding hills are high as 16,000 ft and approach into Paro airport is entirely by visual flight rules.

The airline was established by Royal Proclamation on 5 April 1981. Operations started on 14 January 1983 using an 18-seat Dornier 228-200. Due to the difficult conditions, operations with the older Dornier 228s caused many delays and diversions. With the growth of traffic and the expansion of flights the need for a larger aircraft became necessary. After conducting numerous tests taking into account the difficult conditions the British Aerospace BAe 146-100 was selected and started operations in November 1988. Soon after its introduction the Druk Air network linked Paro with New-Delhi, Bangkok and Kathmandu. Starting with two destinations in 1983. Druk Air now operates from Paro four times a week to Bangkok and Kolkata, twice to Kathmandu and Delhi and once a week to Yangon. It has also started its operation to Dhaka & Varanasi too.

Currently, Druk Air is operating to seven cities in six countries. The airline operates two BAe146-100 series and two A319. Druk Air is also the General Sales Agent for Thai International in Bhutan.

Druk Air is wholly owned by the government of Bhutan (Ministry of Finance). For Bhutan, a landlocked country, the importance of aviation is paramount to the development of the country in enhancing the economic well being of the people as well as fostering quicker communications in the fast growing region. Druk Air is committed to bringing the world closer to the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
