The fifth Bagmati river festival is being celebrated with the objective of spreading public awareness for cleaning of the Bagmati river and protection of its surrounding environment. Nepal River Conservation Trust (NRCT) and Sustainable Tourism Network (STN) are organizing this festival. The festival (June 5 - August 20, 2005) will be observed for two and half months with a variety of programmes including cleanliness campaign, afforestration, rafting competition between media houses, Kayak Competition between school students, painting and poster competition etc.

The festival will come to an end on August 20 with the cultural and religious programmes at Shankamul, Bagmati. Different social organisations and women’s groups are taking part in the festival. More than three consecutive 'Clean-up Campaigns' have been so far conducted at Thapathali and Kupondole areas (in the vicinity of the Bagmati River) during the festival.
