Lukla, Solukhumbu, Nepal

Hotels & Guest Houses & other Information of Lukla, Solukhumbu, Nepal Lukla is a town in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal where most people visiting the Himalayas near Mount Everest start their journey. Lukla, at 2,860 metres (9,380 ft.), contains a small airport where most people begin and end their adventure in the region. Although Lukla means place with many goats and sheep, one is not likely to see many roaming around these days. Looking across the township of Lukla, with the air strip of Lukla Airport in the foreground.

Somewhere between 90-95% of the foreign nationals who reach Lukla will arrive by a hour flight from Kathmandu. The remainder will mainly trek in from Jiri, about a seven to eight day walk. On organized treks, most of the Nepalese guides and kitchen staff will also walk from Jiri to Lukla, albeit in about half the time unless clients are also with them.

Lukla has a variety of shops and lodges where one can have basic western style meals and pick up any last minute items for the trekking or climbing ahead. If one cannot find required items in Lukla, better luck can be had in Namche Bazaar. There are a couple of good climbing shops (e.g. Mountain Madness) in Namche where one can rent carabiners, helmets, ice axes, jumars and harnesses. However, plastic mountaineering boots and crampons are best rented in Kathmandu if they are needed.

Hotels & Guest Houses & other Information of Lukla, Solukhumbu, Nepal From Lukla, most trekking groups will take two days to reach Namche Bazaar, a nice easy pace to help in altitude acclimatization. Distance wise, this segment is doable in one long day (~8 to 10 hours) but not advised due to increased risk of altitude sickness. If not in a formal trekking group, one should double-check tickets with the airline before leaving Lukla. Empty seats on flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are a rarity during the prime seasons and people being bumped off their flights is not uncommon.

Lukla is served by Tenzing-Hillary Airport (Lukla Airport). There are frequent daylight flights between Lukla and Kathmandu, weather permitting. The tiny Dornier and Twin Otter aeroplanes which service the town offer some breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Lukla Airport has one of the steepest runways in the world, at the end of which is a drop to the valley below.

Hotels & Guest Houses & other Information of Lukla, Solukhumbu, Nepal Tenzing-Hillary Airport (IATA: LUA, ICAO: VNLK), also known as Lukla Airport, is a small airport in the town of Lukla, in Khumbu, Solukhumbu district, Sagarmatha zone, eastern Nepal. In January 2008, the airport was renamed in honor of Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, the first persons to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Sir Edmund Hillary died on January 11, 2008. Tenzing Norgay died in 1986.

The airport is popular since Lukla is the place where most people start their climb of Mount Everest. There are daily flights between Lukla and Kathmandu during daylight hours and good weather. Although the flying distance is short, it can easily be raining in Lukla while the sun is shining brightly in Kathmandu. The paved tarmac is only accessible to helicopters and small fixed wing short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft such as Twin Otters or Dornier Do 228. There is about a 700-metre (2,000 ft) angled drop at the end of the runway to the valley below. The airport is contained within a chain link fence and patrolled by the Nepal armed police or civil police around the clock.

The single bitumen runway is 527 metres (1,729 ft) long, 20 metres (66 ft) wide, and has a 12% grade. The altitude of the airport is 2,860 metres (9,380 ft). There are only two airports with higher elevations: El Alto International Airport in Bolivia at 4,061 metres (13,323 ft) high, and Chamdo Bangda Airport in Tibet at 4,334 metres (14,219 ft) above sea level. Due to terrain, runway 06 is used only for landings, and runway 24 for takeoffs. The apron has 4 stands and there is one helipad located 150 metres (490 ft) from the control tower. No landing aids are available and air traffic service is limited to aerodrome flight information service (AFIS) only.
